Feline Diffuse Iris Melanoma (FDIM)
Feline Diffuse Iris Melanoma (FDIM)
Feline Diffuse Iris Melanoma (FDIM) is a form of iris melanoma in cats. Laser therapy is not recommended for iris melanoma in cats owing to their higher metastatic potential compared to other species.
What's really going on
FDIM is a progressive condition where pigmented cells gradually spread across the iris surface. Unlike focal iris melanomas, the diffuse form can be more challenging to monitor and manage. The higher metastatic potential in cats makes early detection and appropriate management critical.
How a specialist helps
Your veterinary ophthalmologist will carefully monitor the progression of the melanoma through regular examinations. Treatment options are discussed based on the progression rate and potential for metastasis. Due to the higher metastatic potential in cats, laser therapy is not recommended. Surgical options may be considered in more advanced cases.
